MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 24 sections, 27 associations and 18 branch offices together. Registered in Switzerland, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement, as well as implements international projects and initiatives as requested.
II. POSITION BACKGROUND
The International Secretary General (SG) is responsible for delivering on a number of “transformational initiatives” (programs and projects) identified by different sponsors (International Board, Executive Committee, International Office). To facilitate the delivery of these projects the SG is supported by the Transformational Portfolio Lead and the Internal Communication Officer. He/she develops overall communications strategies in support of these initiatives.
III. PLACE IN THE ORGANISATION
The Internal Communication Officer is part of the office of the Secretary General of MSF International, line managed by the Transformational Portfolio Lead. The Internal Communication Officer works closely with a range of stakeholders in the IO such as comms officers for specific initiatives, IO coordinators, thematic working groups, etc.
IV. OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION
The Internal Communication Officer is responsible for the development of the overall communications strategies and plans to support the organization’s commitment to the transformational initiatives and other key projects and supports the SG in developing engaging internal communications; this includes a multi-channel portfolio of communications tools that are delivered over time. The Internal Communication Officer will work closely with the SG’s office to compile and coordinate priority communications for audiences such as staff, platforms, etc.
V. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
The Internal Communication Officer will:
- Develop and implement internal communication strategies on behalf of the SG targeting a movement wide audience
- Proactively identify opportunities and needs to proactively communicate internally, as well as initiating responsive communication actions where necessary
- Strategically advise IO initiatives on specific internal comms approaches and tools, effectively utilising different communication channels
- Manage MSF internal communications channels: Develop a prioritisation of initiatives, and maintain an editorial calendar, ensure consistent framing of messages and edit and revise content as necessary
- Oversee the production of IO wide internal comms initiatives such as the MSF International digest (MIDi)
- Advise IO led initiatives on internal comms approaches and proactively reach out to other internal comms expert within the IO and beyond as needed
- Set up internal comms strategies and tools to provide a central information point and dissemination on major interventions (such as COVID, Ukraine, etc) and institutional crises
- Serve as a strategic partner and provide strategic counsel and executive writing support to the SG, including urgent incidental communications; develop messaging and internal presentations for updates, key initiatives and other topics.
- Produce monthly internal updates on behalf of the SG
- Linking with the International knowledge management team to ensure appropriate information management, to ensure accessibility and translations
Job requirements
Education:
- Degree in relevant field such as communications, marketing, public relations, journalism
Experience:
- 4+ years of relevant experience in internal communications in a Humanitarian Organisation or complex international organisations
- Experience in developing multi-stakeholder communication strategies
- Experience in writing strategic communications clearly and efficiently for a variety of stakeholders with the ability to tell a clear and compelling story
Knowledge and Skills:
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal and excellent active listening skills
- Ability to clearly articulate messages to a variety of audiences
- Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within a complex stakeholder network
- Robust understanding of stakeholder management and governance in a humanitarian organisation
- Ability to establish high levels of trust with individuals at various levels within the organization
- Acceptance: Create a safe environment where others feel comfortable surfacing resistance, raising concerns, and pushing back; this includes the ability to listen, be empathetic, and be receptive to different ideas
- Ability to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal
- Must be a team player and able to work collaboratively with and through others

Languages:
- Fluently spoken and written English; French, Arabic and / or Spanish is a strong plus.
