Job description

Location: Paris, with occasional travel to MSF field mission

Contract: Full-time, fixed-term contract

Duration: 12 months, with the possibility of extension/renewal
Starting date: As soon as possible

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 21 sections, 24 associations and other offices together. Based in Geneva, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement, as well as implements international projects and initiatives as requested.


The MSF Legal Department is setting up a legal project unit dedicated to providing legal support to MSF’s medical research and innovation activities. Within this scope, the Legal Project Manager will ensure quality legal support in the following areas:

(i)    He/She will notably be in charge of:

  • The evaluation and redefinition of legal risk and ethical considerations
  • The coherence of legal strategies and their implementation
  • The safeguarding of the legal and ethical framework of medical research and medical innovation activities
  • The negotiation and preparation of contracts

(ii)    He/She will oversee the teams of legal advisors dedicated to medical research and innovation projects based in various MSF offices, as well as collaborating with law firms involved in such projects at both field and HQ levels.

(iii)    He/She will work in close collaboration with the Legal Unit Manager: Medical-Legal framework of missions as well as with the Legal Domain Manager: Commercial Law acting also as Legal Project Manager: Innovation.


Education: Legal degree- Masters of Health/Medical Law and/or Masters of Intellectual Property Law

Experience: Minimum 8 years’ related experience as a lawyer/legal advisor, particularly in the area of medical research


  • Spoken fluency in both English and French and the ability to draft with ease in English (including legal documents)
  • Proven leadership, communication and teamwork skills
  • Knowledge and experience in navigating delicate situations with diplomacy and sensitivity
  • Excellent drafting and analytical skills as well as a heightened understanding of confidentiality
  • Experience in data protection and bio-banking is advantageous
  • Knowledge of MSF and other International NGOs is an asset
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office suite)



  • Gross annual salary of 53,4 K€ over 13 months
  • 22 compensation days (RTT) per year
  • Complementary health insurance 100% covered by MSF
  • Meal vouchers with a face value of 9 € (60% covered by MSF) 
  • 50% local transportation costs covered by MSF.
